I thought it wasn't proper 1080i rendering, nothing of the like ether. They just basically split the image in half, and added pixel doubling to the mix so it's up scaled 480 with some smoke and mirrors.

I've played that version a lot and can tell you it's only marginally better than the standard def resolution in the fact that it allows you to see the approaching corners only very slightly better. It still looks absolutely terrible by today's standards and remains a very very pixelated experience.

Airmail/colissimo: 25000, no customs taxes, if I'm lucky...

Yep, it's some sort of 540p upscaled. Here's an explanation : http://community.us.playstation.com/message/6388872#6388872

By the way, the game only works on this "1080" during races. Everytime you go to the menus, it goes back to 480p. To be honest, it's only a gimmick. I rather prefer to play it on 480p.

PS: Tourist Trophy also has this "1080i mode"

Yeah I read the link you attached before! That's the exact link as well, decent explanation.

You can tell it's switching modes apart from the obvious because the loading animation (similar to your avatar) and text involved suddenly becomes pixelated to fuck just before a race. Not to mention the complete spack out the console goes through, by which I mean for a couple of seconds it looks like the PS2 is coughing up it's video memory all over the screen as it changes modes by way of multi coloured scrambled garbage when exiting a race and focused linear garbage lines just before a race if I remember correctly.

I've only viewed this on an LCD TV but there's a very ovbious 'linear' property to the screen render as well, like it could be very very very mild scanlines.

I've played it as well on the very screen I'm looking at. The 480p mode upscaled using my Dell 2405FPW's internal hardware looked better by a HUGE margin. 1080i was garbage, utter garbage.

I'd have to take a picture as the English language doesn't have adjectives strong enough to explain how I feel.

given that the ps2 could output 1280x1024 atleast according to the hardware details here https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/PlayStation_2

im interested if the PS2 was truly pushed could it output 720p at playable frame rates given that everyone agrees GT4 1080i is nothing but lies

ive seen the CGR review on Gran Turismo 4 and at 1080i it looks better
but you can still see the pixilated mess
