1'100'000 Vs 340'000

Acording to Yahoo Japan news these are the official sales figures for the Nintendo DS and PSP in Japan. I find it very hard to belive but Yahoo claim Nintendo to have sold 1'100'000 DS units in Japan by the end of 2004 !! That's an awful lot of units. While the PSP only managed to shift 340'000 units. Even if Sony hadn't sold out, could they have sold 1'100'000 PSPs? Makes you wonder doesn't it?
Here is a translation of the story followed by the original Japanese version

"Nintendo DS" -- The domestic sales figure of the new style handheld game machine stated by the ENTA brain trust (Tokyo) is 1,100,000-units and "Sony PSP" 340,000-units = These figures are for the end of year game sales. Game information magazine "FAMIMITSU" attracted attention by the year-end shopping rush on the 7th -- Nintendo "NINTENDO DS" of <7974> -- "of about 1,100,000 units and Sony Computer Entertainment (S C E) -- it was announced that Playstation portable (PSP) sold about 340,000 units. The ENTA brain trust, thinks the following - "What will happen in the game market of 2005 is unknown, both products show have their attractions." Although these statistics total from November 29 to December 26, it is said that PSP sales will amount to 450,000 units in the total by January 2. (Jiji Press)

This means absolutely nothing mate, the PSP could easily match Nintendo's sales figures if they could get enough of the things on the shelves which will start to happen over the next few weeks.

Every time PSP goes on sale, it sells out and if you are listening to the dev news, things are very, very quiet now on the DS front whilst there is PSP games getting announced left ,right, and centre.Nintendo done extremely well to take advantage of the PSP shortage at launch but they have faled to keep this momentum going with solid announcements over the last two weeks.I think once PSP is readily available over the next month or so, it will outsell the DS quite easily,I may be wrong but I don't think Nintendo can compete with the more powerful hardware and the fact that the dev co's are swarming to the sexier psp now as well.

Dev co's were worried that the psp would not have a successful launch, now it has it changes the situation once again.PSP is behind in sales but most firmly in the driving seat at the moment.

Hey, it's not all fun and games on the PSP either, methinks. Anyhow, wasn't the DS released several weeks before the PSP?

The DS has one of the greatest games of all time on it's system...Super mario 64, it also has Sawaru made in Wario and Band brothers as well.

Psp has two absolute gems in Ridge Racers and Lumines, and metal Gear Acid is very highly rated by press and gamers too, so each system has three top class games each, not bad for about a month after launch. :smt045

PSP has the more exciting games on the horizon though.

I think it was only 2 weeks before. I don't want this thread to become "Your DS is shite and my PSP is a pussy magnet" or vise versa type thread. I simply started it to inform people of how sales are going. Nintendomad has a good point in his post but like my translation says, both systems have their plus and minus points so we'll have to wait and see how 2005 shapes up.

Good point, there is no point in slagging off either system if you are not prepared to back your statement up by fact. Both systems have good games already and both have a reason to own them.I just personally feel that the DS will struggle unless it can whip out some great software on a very regulr basis, like the psone did against the Nintendo 64(OK not the greatest example, but joe blogss felt the psone had the better software) for example.People are obviously going to be wowed by the big pretty PSP screen and superior graphics, so the DS has to pump out innovative and exciting software like sawaru and catch!Touch!Yoshi!, even more so since the PSP has pumped out some innovative stuff of it's own with metal Gear AC!D and Lumines.

I get the feeling that not enough has been announced for the DS yet, whilst Sony are making announcements on an almost daily basis.Nintendo needs to steal back some of the thunder, they have shown they can do this when they put their minds to it, the marketing campaign for the DS just before releae in both the US and particuarly japan was superb and no doubt helped the bouyant sales figures they have had.

maybe one point in these numbers is also the price for both systems, wasnt a the ds a lot cheaper then the psp at launch ?

that could have convinced many people to go with a ds even it the difference was only 10-20 $ (does anyone have real numbers on both launchprices ?)
