Many PlayStation fans who like to see Made in Japan are increasingly missing this feature on modern PlayStations. Although dev/reference/test kits are only manufactured in Japan but I will be discussing consumer models only. In my opinion Made in Japan is nothing more than psychological effect since component suppliers are roughly the same; nevertheless I would still like to see Made in Japan on my console. But even in Japan there was not any single factory which produced all PlayStations and influenced from the thread http://www.assemblergames.com/forums/showthread.php?52308-PlayStation-2-production-plants I decided to build the list of plants which were involved in the production (final assembly) of different generations of PlayStation video game consoles and provided little information where I could but remember that info. provided here is correct to best of my knowledge and I am not professing that it is 100% correct. Although the list is supposed to comprehensive but I suspect despite of my best efforts it may be still incomplete and if anyone having some information which is missing here is welcome to add in this thread.
The list is built by compiling the labels of NTSC-J and NTSC-U/C consoles where former one provides information about manufacturing company and latter one tells about manufacturing location while PAL models just states made in Japan/China.

Between 2000-2001, Sony merged its assembly plants into a single company known as Sony EMCS. After that back also labels began to display names accordingly but still plant code could be found.

But PSX's stickers don't display any information about their production location other than country's name. I don't know if any plant other than Kisarazu is involved in its production.

This is interesting. And it also explains why I've seen some consoles with "S EMCS" written on them, but with "SKZ" written in the corner of their stickers.

So SOLECTRON is also known as "SJN MIYAGI"? Any idea what does SJN stand for?
There's actually one more label for SOLECTRON, which seems to be only for the SCPH-18000. It's like the "S KISARAZU" label, but just reads "SOLECTRON". I'm not sure if they manufactured only one type of SCPH-18000 or both (A-chassis+ and AB-chassis).

Yes I actually saw that label but since SCPH-18000 but that doesn't contain factory code and because of the fact that plant code remains constant regardless of product model so I shall clarify (why I said SOLECTRON J=SJN Miyagi) with the help of another example which is SCPH-30000. You will notice that SCPH-30001 (shown above) and SCPH-30000 contain same code. As I have said that NTSC-J contains name of Manufacturing Company unlike NTSC-U/C which states Manufacturing Location, same is true for Solectron made consoles as well. My guess is SJN stands for Solectron Japan and sorry I didn't get "(A-chassis+ and AB-chassis)"

Thanks for clearing that up.

The SCPH-18000 appears to be an attempt by SONY to get rid of their stock of old console parts. There are two models of it:
SCPH-18000 A-chassis+: GH-003 (The mainboard from the SCPH-15000) with a replacement BOOT + DVD ROM chip connected via the internal expansion board connector. Still has the old EE (Has the short-loop bug) and IOP chips.
SCPH-18000 AB-chassis: GH-008 (Has the newer EE and IOP chips from the SCPH-30000, and with the new boot ROM and DVD ROM chips. Still has the old CXD9566R SSBUSC and PC CARD interface)

The CXD9566R SSBUSC (SS-bus Controller) handles access to a lot of peripherals. But it's mainly known to us for providing the expansion interface (PC CARD slot for these early consoles). Expansion bay consoles have a CXD9611 or CXD9686.

The SCPH-10000 and SCPH-15000 are known as A-chassis consoles. Hence A-chassis+ is like an enhanced version of the A-chassis.
The first SCPH-30000 is a B-chassis, so an AB-chassis is like a hybrid between the two.

FYI, the new boot ROM provided:
1. A new kernel, which has the new implementations of GetOsdConfig() and SetOsdConfig, ExecPS2(), and had the GetOsdConfig2() and SetOsdConfig2() functions added. The OsdConfig functions were replaced for the support of the browser update v2.00, and to identify that the kernel is a new kernel. ExecPS2() was replaced to prevent the kernel from crashing when it is used (No game ever needed it because it was only used with HDD support).
2. Built-in HDD support. The SCPH-10000 and SCPH-15000 consoles did not have HDD support built-in and required a system driver update to be installed on the memory card. This system driver update also patches the old kernel, for #1.
3. A new OSD that supports those special PS2-only characters in FONTM. It was also fixed to not have the argument-passing bug.
4. Built-in DVD player.

On the surface, I don't think that there's a known way to determine which mainboard is inside the SCPH-18000.

Cool thread. I didn't realize they manufactured the PS4 in Japan.

I think SKZ now only produces consoles at its launch time when demand is too high (usually in millions in case of ps4). One plant in China cannot handle all burden, so remaining game systems have to be produced somewhere else. Now I only expect to see "Made in Japan" console when ps5 is released.

What about disc manufacturers? I was going through my demo collection and saw that some discs still have mailing labels on them. I didn't see a relevant thread to put this one, so maybe someone will find it useful. This is on the back of The Unholy War demo. Address blacked out, it isn't mine.

Sony Disc Manufacturing

There is a subsidiary of Sony known as Sony DADC which manufactures discs not only for PS consoles but also for movie, software and game publishers. Now Sony's Indiana facility (the same address shown in picture) is only Sony disc manufacturing facility left in the United States and it is responsible for producing ps3, ps4 discs for PlayStation in US region. There were also other plants in the US but they are now closed as disc business is shrinking due to digital downloads. Sony DADC has many plants all over the world which produce PS discs for their respective regions. For European, Middle Eastern and African regions discs are made in Austria*, for Japan and some Asian Pacific regions discs are manufactured in Japan and for US discs are produced in United States.
I have also seen PS discs made in Australia, Mexico and Brazil.

Actually, Sony DADC have UK facilities, too. Their Enfield distribution centre suffered a major fire in 2011, but they continued production in Southwater. They definitely dealt with UMDs at Enfield - whether they manufactured them in the UK, too, I'm not sure. There's also the office in London. I did find this, mind you:

Sony DADC UK Ltd. provides optical media replication services, supply chain solutions, and software services to the entertainment, education, and information industries. The company offers disc replication for Blu-ray, DVD, CD-audio replication, DualDisc, super audio CD, CD-ROM replication, Recordables, PlayStation, and universal media discs; digital rights management and disc specials; artwork and packaging services; component preparation, including audio and ROM premastering, film setting, input media, and media transfer services; eBridge, a crossmedia digital management application; electronic disc key and digital copy; and digital and digital content services, managed services, systems integration, video CD and conversion, and inbound and outbound services. The company was founded in 2006 and is based in Southwater, United Kingdom. Sony DADC UK Ltd. operates as a subsidiary of Sony DADC Austria AG.
